My friend from Vernon was coming for a visit so I decided to provide a real treat for her - and treat it was, for both of us. Where? Well, last summer my son came from Penticton for a visit. I told them about the organic blueberries at Onninks, how they use Falcons instead of cannon to control birds, how they use manually distributed nematodes instead of chemicals to control insect pests. Of course they went to check out the blueberries right away, and brought back a box of them which we immediately proceeded to consume. By Shannon Tucker
Bradner, BC - Driving home this morning we came across a tiny baby kitten laying in the middle of Taylor Road. Stopped to investigate and saw he was bleeding from the mouth. Looks like he was hit by a passing car. Scooped him up and got him to Dr. Burton. Fortunately, the prognosis is good. After a big bowl of cat food and a saucer of cream he fell into a deep sleep. We are not sure whether he is meant to be our angel, or whether he belongs to someone else. If you or someone you know who has lost a kitten please email us. By Ashley & Karolina Rempel
Brander Elementary School's Division 1 class went on an amazing fieldtrip to the Fraser River. Their first stop was Weaver Creek Spawning Channel in Harrison Mills, BC. It was a beautiful October day, not too hot not too cold, as the kids had so much fun watching the weak salmon try and swim upstream and jump over the mini waterfalls. The students got to run around and observe the alive, almost dead and dead salmon. Some of the students were able to step on the rotting carcases and make them squirt out their eggs…eww gross right?!! They watched as the greedy seagulls squawked at each other while fighting over the dead salmon that covered the paths…we were told the fishy smell attracts bears and eagles to the area, which would have been exciting to see. Bradner, BC - Here is a compelling story of what was most likely a thwarted attempt of mail theft as explained to me by a rural homeowner. If you have any comments on this story, please email me and I will forward the message to the landowner who contacted me. A possible mail theft was averted recently on Townshipline Road, between Ross and Bradner Roads. Where a flower stand and pumpkin stand are along the road. Sometimes mail gets delivered in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon-not consistent. By Nancy McRae
