Parents/Guardians received this message, about School Bus fees, from the Abbotsford School District Superintendent, Kevin Godden today. The provincial government recently announced that they will provide school districts with additional funding for student transportation. Of the $14.7M in additional funding, $254,000 is slated for the Abbotsford School District. It is the expectation of government that school districts will eliminate fees for "eligible riders for bus service to catchment schools." In our case, the province has advised that the funding must be used for the purpose of eliminating user fees for eligible riders who live outside the walk limit of their catchment area schools. It is important to note that this funding does not defray the fees for riders within the walk limits of catchment schools, nor does it apply to transportation to district programs. Fees will remain in place for these services.
The district's budget for 2016-17 included $2.75M in operating expenses for student transportation. The Board of Education is appreciative of this additional $254,000, which will support its goal of reducing the overall net costs of transportation in the district. You may access more information on the transportation budget on our website. Staff from our Transportation Department will be in contact with impacted families in the coming days so as to ensure a smooth start to the school year.
